Why Magnets Rare Earth Is So Widely Used?

During the seventies, people were introduced to "The Godfather", disco, polyester and magnets rare earth. While Marlon Brando and disco no longer exist, and the polyester itches, the rare-earth magnets are still going strong.

The Materials and Its Shapes

It is quite rare to find the materials present in this type of magnets and that is why it is termed rare-earth magnets. The mineral composition of this material includes yttrium, scandium and the fifteen lanthanoids, which are usually found together in nature. The development of first type of this magnet was made using the samarium cobalt. This material has weak magnetic field and quite expensive. Even though they are still being used, nowadays it is more common to find the use of neodymium iron boron. These can be found in different grades and shapes. The shapes include the rings, spheres, prisms, rods, disks, cubes, rectangles and squares. The material is susceptible to easy breakage and corrosion, so they are generally covered to avoid them from being broken or chipped.

The Charge

The rare-earth magnet's magnetism is considered permanent because the crystalline structures present in this material remain aligned in one direction and cannot be aligned in another direction. Its slightly empty f-shell that is inclusive of 7 unpaired electrons means that it functions as a paramagnetic center and its orbital remains powerfully localized. This type of magnet’s exceptional strength can be explained by these two characteristics. In fact, one can suffer bodily harm because of the strong charge present in these magnets. One can suffer physical injury if a finger accidentally gets between these powerful magnets. Its power can even cause disruption in the charge of other magnets such as those used on credit cards and computers. With a powerful variety of this magnet it is possible to wipe out the hard drive of a computer within seconds.

The Applications

Magnets rare earth is used in many important devices. These magnets can be found in different types of storage media like computer hard drives as well as in headphones, ordinary speakers, and in the cordless tool's permanent magnet motors. There is also a type of flashlight that generates electricity by shaking the flashlight. Other common uses include electric guitar pickups, fishing reel breaks and bicycle dynamos.

Even in automobiles magnets are used effectively to pull the metal bits present in the oil. These magnets can also be used to find metal items like nails on the floors and walls. Its uses include carrying out the dent in brass instruments. Without the help of a container or sheet, different types of knives and tools can be held using this magnet. Other places where magnets rare earth are found include refrigerator, jewelry clasps, water conditioners, homemade compass, cabinet latches and metal detectors.
